November 10, 2012 – CORD Jaffna: Organic farming Workshop for CORD Self Help Groups and CORD Staff

On 10th November 2012 the CORD staff in Jaffna organized a Organic Farming Training workshop for its Self-Help Group leader at the CORD office in Jaffna conducted by the Vaddukoddai Development Foundation; who are the pioneers in training and implementation in Organic Farming. 21 participants participated in this workshop.

The overall objective of this workshop was to introduce and promote organic farming within the CORD Self Help Groups and train the staff to implement and monitor Organic Farming activities.

The excessive use of chemical insecticides and fertilizer for farming has posted many issues for people of this area such as contaminated water supply, health conditions such as; cancer, skin problems, imbalance of hormones etc. Hence CORD identified that one of the best ways to tackle with this current problem and help empower people along was Organic Farming, as it is more economical and environmentally friendly.

The following topics were explained and discussed:

-Preparing different types of  organic fertilizers and insecticides to eradicate different pesticides by using the natural available resources and materials such as  cow dung, cow urine, neem leave and seed and earthworm.

-Identify the different pesticides.

-Method of collecting natural resources.

-Method of collecting wastage materials.

-Preventing the materials.

-Utilizing and distributing the collected materials and prepared materials.
