Educational Projects

Support for students with school essentials

With the support of volunteers and donors, we have been committed to providing essential school supplies to those in need. Children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds often struggle to afford these necessities, hindering their ability to learn effectively. This initiative plays a vital role in empowering them on their educational journey, equipping them with the resources they need to thrive, excel, and build a brighter future.

Career guidance

Children from rural areas and financially deprived families lack knowledge about the diverse careers present in society. We conduct career guidance programmes to acknowledge them about the careers available, help them choose what suits them the most, and to sail them towards their dream careers.

English language lessons

We have begun English class for students, thanks to the support of our volunteers. The class is conducted at CORD’s Ulavanoor office in Kilinochchi. Children from the area attend these classes.

Computer classes

We have also started computer classes to teach students how to use computers productively. Students who don’t have access to computers later struggle when they go for higher studies and jobs, as they must rely on computers to get their work done. CORD has ensured that such students get access to computers and learn to be productive with them.

Pre-school development
  • Most of the poor women depend on pre-schools/daycare centres to keep their children while they engage in their livelihood activities. However, most of them were in extreme poverty and find it difficult to provide decent daycare facilities to their children and depend on pre-schools run by the parents themselves. Most of the pre-schools run by the parents were in extremely poor and unhygienic condition, lacking even the basic amenities such as toilets, desks, chairs, educational equipment and trained teachers.

  • CORD has developed pre-schools in Chavakachchery in Thenmarachchi area run by the parents without any outside assistance. They receive no assistance from the government other than a payment of a small allowance to the teacher. CORD organized a special three-day workshop for 45 preschool teachers conducted by a highly qualified Montessori teacher/principal from the USA. The teachers were highly appreciative of the training they received on sophisticated educational techniques and wanted more sessions of this nature. CORD has commenced a project to improve these preschools and properly equip them to make the environment conducive for both the teachers and the students.
Women’s Day programmes

As part of the Women Empowerment Project, CORD organizes Women’s Day celebrations to honour and uplift women in the community. The event features engaging cultural programs, thought-provoking awareness dramas performed by women from self-help groups (SHGs), and insightful talks by esteemed guests. Additionally, women supported by the project showcase their entrepreneurial spirit by setting up stalls to sell handcrafted products, fresh vegetables, and fruits from their home gardens. This celebration not only recognizes the achievements of women but also provides them with valuable opportunities for social and economic empowerment.
