Home gardening

We encourage people from low-income families, especially women-led families, to do sustainable home gardening in small lands, following correct agronomical practices using organic manure to produce pesticide-free fruits and vegetables. This not only guarantees food security but also provides them with supplementary income. We support them by providing seeds and planting materials, and also get them the help of agricultural officers. As part of this program, the Kilinochi district was provided with quality seeds, seedlings, fertilizer, and technical training. The CORD agricultural consultant conducted field visits to further assist them. We have expanded this initiative further.

Sustainable agricultural practices

We have introduced sustainable agricultural practices such as the production of vermicompost, Azolla cultivation, organic, Fish Tonic fertilizer production and organic home gardening. These initiatives thrive thanks to the valuable insights and support from agricultural experts and officers, who make regular visits to guide and inspire our efforts. Apart from these, mushroom cultivation and beekeeping were also introduced by us.

Poultry farming

We support backyard poultry by providing poultry birds and also incubators to hatch eggs. This also provides both finance and food to families with lower incomes. To date, CORD has distributed 300 chicks and 2-month-old pullets to 100 SHG members and trained them to manage poultry production.

Cattle farming

Cattle farming has always been a major farming practice in Sri Lanka. It has always proved to be a stable source of income. We encourage families struggling with low-income to do cattle farming effectively. We have distributed cows to selected families, and the first female calf is expected to be given to another SHG woman, further expanding the programme. CORD has distributed cows to 24 members and trained them to develop dairy businesses. Cattle farming has also provided them with organic and healthy manure for their gardens.

Domestic wells

In Kilinochchi District, poor families face severe hardships during drought periods lasting up to six months due to a lack of safe drinking water. To address this critical issue, CORD has initiated a project with the support of donors, focusing on renovating and deepening existing wells and constructing new community wells. This effort aims to enhance access to clean water, improving the well-being of affected families and building resilience against future droughts.

Women’s Day programmes

As part of the Women Empowerment Project, CORD organizes Women’s Day celebrations to honour and uplift women in the community. The event features engaging cultural programs, thought-provoking awareness dramas performed by women from self-help groups (SHGs), and insightful talks by esteemed guests. Additionally, women supported by the project showcase their entrepreneurial spirit by setting up stalls to sell handcrafted products, fresh vegetables, and fruits from their home gardens. This celebration not only recognizes the achievements of women but also provides them with valuable opportunities for social and economic empowerment.
