Emergency Relief
Tsunami relief project
CORD Sri Lanka commenced its service course with this project. The 2004 Tsunami affected many people, especially those who lived in the coastal areas of the island. People lost their loved ones and their livelihood. Many voluntary and service-based organizations helped those who were affected. CORD extended its helping hands mainly in Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Mullaitivu districts. We provided dry rations, freshly cooked foods, medicines, shelter for those who lost theirs and other basic requirements.
Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDP) camp project
The Sri Lankan Civil War, which lasted for nearly three decades, had a profound impact on communities across the country. Many families were displaced, facing immense challenges in rebuilding their lives. They lacked not only essential needs but also the spark of life in their eyes. During 2009 and 2010, CORD helped them by visiting the camps and providing dry rations, clothing, medicines, other basic needs, and, above all, morale support to reignite the spark of life they lacked.
Covid-19 pandemic
CORD’s helping hands were also there during the COVID-19 pandemic. We distributed masks and hand sanitisers to selected villages. We also provided dry rations to families living in extreme poverty in remote villages who faced unprecedented food shortages in Jaffna and Kilinochchi. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some government hospitals needed essential medical items urgently. We donated pulse oxymetry, digital thermometers, a digital sphygmomanometer and KN-95 masks to the Mullaitivu Base hospital after receiving an urgent request from the management.
Economic crisis
During the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, we helped people who had very low income by providing them with food, necessary medicines, nutrition supplements for children, and a certain amount of cash. This support was crucial for families struggling to meet their basic needs, as many had lost their jobs or faced severe income cuts. Thanks to the timely support from our donors.
