Women Empowerment
Self Help Groups (SHGs)
CORD Sri Lanka is dedicated to empowering women by establishing Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These voluntary associations bring together individuals from similar socio-economic backgrounds, allowing them to collectively address common challenges. SHGs promote self-reliance, mutual support, and shared responsibility, creating a strong foundation for personal and community growth.
Through these groups, women are given opportunities for skill development, financial independence, and greater social integration. Participation in SHGs helps them build confidence, improve their living standards, and break free from the cycle of poverty.
Palmyra-based cottage industry
We conduct comprehensive training programs focused on crafting a range of Palmyra leaf products such as baskets, mats, hats, and string hopper trays. Participants also learn to produce Palmyra-based food items including dried palm sprouts, Palmyra jaggery, and Palmyra flour. Beyond hands-on skills, we offer guidance in pricing, packaging, and marketing to equip individuals with the tools needed to launch and manage sustainable small-scale businesses.
To ensure long-term success, we provide continuous support by monitoring product quality, tracking sales, and offering practical feedback for improvement. We also help participants expand their reach by connecting them with the Palmyra Development Board and local shops, thereby enhancing their market access and creating more opportunities for growth and income generation.
Women’s access to income
We support women in gaining financial independence through local bank partnerships. These financial tools empower women-led families to start or grow small businesses, boost household income, and enhance their overall standard of living. By removing financial barriers, we create opportunities for women to become active economic contributors within their communities.
With increased financial stability, women are better equipped to invest in their children’s education and healthcare, escape cycles of debt, and build confidence in managing their livelihoods. These programs go beyond individual benefits—they foster economic empowerment that strengthens families and contributes to more resilient, self-sufficient communities.
Small-scale product manufacturing and marketing
In addition to the Palmyra-based cottage industry, we support women in launching a variety of small enterprises such as tailor shops, small retail outlets, incense stick production, paper bag manufacturing, and handwash making. These initiatives help women generate stable income within their own communities. Small retail shops, often run from their homes or village centers, provide a reliable source of earnings while serving local needs.
To ensure the success of these ventures, we offer targeted training programs. Women interested in tailoring receive structured classes, while those involved in manufacturing are trained in the production of paper bags, incense sticks, and handwash. These opportunities are especially focused on women with low incomes, enabling them to build sustainable livelihoods.
Cashew production
CORD initiated a cashew processing facility at Paranthan 20 in Northern Province to employ women in the area who face severe economic hardships during drought months. Since cashew farming requires moderate to lower water when compared with other crops, and it holds high value in the market, it proved to be a successful source of income in such areas. Women work both in cashew farms and in the cashew processing facility.
Women’s Day programmes
As part of the Women Empowerment Project, CORD organizes Women’s Day celebrations to honour and uplift women in the community. The event features engaging cultural programs, thought-provoking awareness dramas performed by women from self-help groups (SHGs), and insightful talks by esteemed guests. Additionally, women supported by the project showcase their entrepreneurial spirit by setting up stalls to sell handcrafted products, fresh vegetables, and fruits from their home gardens. This celebration not only recognizes the achievements of women but also provides them with valuable opportunities for social and economic empowerment.
Supporting pregnant women
Women who have financial constraints struggle very much during their pregnancy. CORD identifies them and provides ample support to them. We support both the mother and later the baby until 6th months. We provide nutritional and basic requirements for a healthy mother and baby along with regular consultations from midwives. We are doing this project by partnering up with other voluntary organizations (Recreational Sport and Nutritional program of Central Jersey Community Association of USA).
